SiberMu Law School Faculty Member Participates in International Community Project on Legal Awareness for Non-Documented Migrant Workers in Penang, Malaysia

Penang, Malaysia (April, 25th 2026) — Alhamdulillah, a faculty member of SiberMu Law School participated in the International Community Project entitled Enhancing Legal Awareness and Understanding of Non-Documented Migrant Workers from Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Bangladesh in Penang, Malaysia. This international community engagement activity was organized by the Center for Labor Law Studies and Protection of Indonesian Migrant Workers / Pusat Kajian Hukum Ketenagakerjaan dan Pelindungan Pekerja Migran Indonesia (PusKaHKP2MI – Master of Law Program, Universitas Ahmad Dahlan) in collaboration with the Indonesian Association of Labor Law Lecturers and Practitioners / Perkumpulan Pengajar dan Praktisi Hukum Ketenagakerjaan Indonesia (P3HKI) and Pertubuhan Masyarakat Indonesia (PERMAI) Penang.

This program was designed to strengthen legal awareness, improve understanding of migrant workers’ rights, and provide practical legal knowledge for non-documented migrant workers from several countries, including Indonesia, the Philippines, Myanmar, and Bangladesh. The activity also served as an international platform for academic institutions, legal practitioners, and community organizations to contribute to the protection and empowerment of vulnerable migrant communities.

As part of the program, Afriansyah Tanjung, faculty member of SiberMu Law School with expertise in Private Law and Society, delivered a presentation entitled Legal Risk and Labour Vulnerability in Migrant Empowerment: The Function of International Private Law in Contract Consent and Negotiation. His presentation highlighted the importance of understanding legal risks faced by migrant workers, particularly in employment relations, contract formation, consent, and negotiation processes across jurisdictions. The discussion emphasized that International Private Law plays a significant role in identifying applicable legal frameworks, protecting contractual rights, and reducing vulnerability in transnational labour arrangements.

Through this participation, SiberMu Law School reaffirmed its commitment to strengthening international community engagement and expanding its academic contribution beyond national boundaries. This activity is also in line with SiberMu’s broader vision of promoting accessible, inclusive, and socially responsive legal education that contributes to global communities.

The Faculty hopes that this international community project will provide meaningful benefits for migrant workers, community partners, and academic institutions involved in the program. In addition, articles and reflections from participants and university partners have been collected as part of the program outcomes and knowledge dissemination efforts.
