Universitas Siber Muhammadiyah and Sahabat Migran Muhammadiyah (SaranMu) Hong Kong Launch International Community Service Program to Empower Indonesian Migrant Workers

Hong Kong – Sunday, September 14th , 2025 – Universitas Siber Muhammadiyah (SiberMu) proudly announces the successful implementation of an International Community Service (PkM) Collaboration with Sahabat Migran Muhammadiyah (SaranMu) Hong Kong, under the theme: “Enhancing Financial Literacy, Digital Security, and the Utilization of AI Technology for Indonesian Migrant Workers in Hong Kong.” This initiative reflects a shared commitment to empowering Indonesian Migrant Workers (PMIs) not only as contributors to the global economy, but as individuals with aspirations, resilience, and the potential to thrive in the digital era.

Indonesian migrant workers in Hong Kong play a crucial role in sustaining families and communities back home through their dedication and hard work. However, rapid technological development and rising digital risks present new challenges that require updated skills and awareness. Recognizing this reality, SiberMu and SaranMu designed this program as a practical and human-centered intervention—one that equips migrant workers with knowledge that can strengthen their financial independence, protect them from digital vulnerabilities, and open new opportunities through the responsible use of Artificial Intelligence (AI).

The program placed strong emphasis on financial literacy as a foundation for long-term security. Participants were guided through practical strategies for budgeting, managing remittances, planning savings, and understanding safe investment practices. Rather than focusing solely on short-term income management, the sessions encouraged participants to think about sustainable financial futures—ensuring that their hard-earned income can generate lasting benefits for themselves and their families.

In addition to financial education, digital security became a central theme of the training. With the growing prevalence of phishing scams, identity theft, and online fraud, migrant workers are increasingly exposed to digital threats. The sessions provided accessible and practical guidance on recognizing suspicious online activity, protecting personal data, securing devices, and conducting safe digital financial transactions. By strengthening digital awareness, the program aimed to foster confidence and reduce vulnerability in an interconnected world.

A distinctive feature of the collaboration was the introduction of AI tools as instruments of empowerment rather than intimidation. Participants were introduced to practical AI applications that can support everyday productivity, learning, language improvement, small business development, and creative content creation. The discussions emphasized ethical and responsible use of AI, reinforcing the idea that technology should enhance human capability—not replace it. By demystifying AI and presenting it as an accessible tool, the program encouraged participants to embrace innovation with confidence.

This initiative also marks a meaningful step in strengthening international academic-community partnerships. As a digital-based higher education institution, Universitas Siber Muhammadiyah brings expertise in technology-driven education and innovation. Sahabat Migran Muhammadiyah (SaranMu) Hong Kong contributes deep grassroots engagement, cultural understanding, and trusted networks within the migrant community. Together, they bridge academic knowledge with real-life needs, ensuring that empowerment efforts remain relevant and impactful.

Beyond a single event, this collaboration represents a long-term commitment to supporting Indonesian migrant communities abroad. Future programs may include continuous online mentoring, digital upskilling workshops, entrepreneurship development initiatives, and expanded awareness on digital rights and security. Through compassion, innovation, and shared responsibility, Universitas Siber Muhammadiyah and SaranMu Hong Kong reaffirm their mission to ensure that Indonesian migrant workers are not left behind in the digital era, but instead move forward with greater resilience, knowledge, and opportunity.

Humas SiberMu.
